Mt. Henry Explodes

The Easter Bunny gave Henry a science volcano kit. What a crazy rabbit!

We sure had fun making the volcano today. Both kids were very excited to get started.

First step was to paint the volcano. Next step was to determine the perfect mixture of baking soda, water, liquid dish soap, red food coloring, and vinegar. All these initial tests were done in some test tubes. What happens if you leave one of those ingredients out? What happens if you double the amount of baking soda? What happens if you double the baking soda and the vinegar? Then we were ready to add our perfect mixture to the volcano. Boom!Over and over again. We just kept cleaning out the tube (the scientific name is "the pipe") and adding in new mixtures of the basic ingredients - baking soda, water, liquid dish soap, red food coloring, and vinegar. Our favorite one was just baking soda (lots of it), dish soap (a little), red food coloring (just a pinch), and vinegar (tons of it). Doesn't that sound scientific? Dan was out doing errands when the kids and I started our experiments. He came home and looked a little sad that we had started without him. But he joined right in - adding way more baking soda and vinegar than I thought prudent!! - and had fun making our volcano erupt.
Wow! Now this is fun. We love science.
