Another busy weekend at our house. This morning, Henry and Dan were at the Cub Scout Pinewood Derby.
It's a rather long story, but to sum it up... Last year, Henry and Dan put very little time in to creating Henry's car. So, when his car didn't place, it was no surprise and we had a lesson on not succeeding at things you don't put much effort in to. This year, Henry and Dan put a lot of time and effort in to creating the blue car below. However, when they went to attach the wheels late Thursday night, they discovered that they had cut off a little too much wood, and the wheels didn't spin as they should.
The weigh-in was at 7pm Friday night. At 3pm that day, Dan started cutting out a brand new car. As soon as Henry arrived home from school, he helped with cutting, sanding, and staining. So... with only three hours of work in to the second car, they finished it at 6pm and went to the weigh-in with the car.
Dan still submitted the blue car in the open-class, just for the heck of it. Note that the front had to be sawed off. The weigh-in is always an interesting night when the scales you've been using don't match the scales the pack is using.
There's Henry's car, #21. I was actually wondering about the conversation we'd have this year when he only put in three hours work but yet he won. But never fear - he didn't come close to placing. Poor kid. I think after two years, we can say with certainty that creating Pinewood Derby Cars is not one of Dan's, nor Henry's, favorite projects. 
During the Derby, I was at a Girl Scout leader training. Which meant that Alice got to have a fun playdate with her friend, Avery. They went bowling and had a great morning together.
