Treadwell Mine Hike

When Henry heard we could tour an abandoned gold mine, he decided that was going to be the highlight of the trip. He was so excited until we discovered that the Treadwell Mine was really just a hiking trail with a couple abandoned buildings - it was difficult to imagine an active mine on this site.

The Treadwell Mine was the largest gold mine of the Alaskan Panhandle and, in its time, the largest gold mine in the world. From 1881 to 1922, over 3 million ounces of gold were extracted. Although it looks like a bunch of run-down buildings covered in graffiti now, all of the mining did produce something really positive... the only sandy beach in the area. It's believed the sand is from the mine tailings. We got about an hour of sun and partial blue sky so we took advantage of it by playing at the beach.
The boys did what boys do at beaches - throw stuff in the water.
Ethan was overjoyed to find a bunch of gooey mussels.

Alice? She was just happy to be with Allie and Uncle Gary.
Apparently, Allie never ever tires of chasing a stick in to the water. Ever.

A girl and her best friend.
