Today, Alice and I attended a unique birthday party... at the beach! Happy birthday, Roisin.
We went to Padilla Bay and were treated to a full field trip adventure with a marine biologist. We started at the Padilla Bay Interpretive Center where we learned the definition of an estuary... where the river meets the sea. Padilla Bay is an estuary - the Skagit River, fresh water, flows into the bay, salt water. After some background on the area and what we might find down at the beach, off we went.
We were there at low tide. Can you tell?
The kids spread out and looked for marine animals.
The biologist warned us of the mud at the beach. He wasn't exaggerating. More than one kid lost a boot today which an unwilling parent had to retrieve.
But it was worth it. By wading through the mud, you could get to the good stuff. Tons and tons of mudflat snails.
Alice even found a live oyster.
The biologist was very patient and helped the kids identify their finds.
Alice also found this... part of a seal's skull.
Everyone was a muddy mess by the time we left.
But we sure had fun.
