Fall is in the air and it's "Field Trip Tuesday"... off to the apple orchard!
This particular orchard allows you to take one of their golf carts for a self-guided tour of the farm. It was fun seeing all the rows and rows of apples.

It's considered "early season" for apples in Whatcom County. We got to sample the three apple varieties which were ripe today -
- Tsugaru: a gourmet desert apple, rated as 2nd best eating apple in Japan, introduced to the US in 1975.
- Zestar: my favorite, with a great combination of sugar and acid.
- Gravenstein: introduced to the US in 1820 from the Duke of Austinburg's garden in Gravenstein, Denmark; it's a crisp, juicy, aromatic apple with the typical tart-sweet flavor.
Made it out of there today with some Tsugarus and Zestars. And some caramel dipping sauce - yum....

Sounds like a fun day. Do you have an orchard you like to go to? I'm looking to make about 36 quarts of apple sauce and need lots of apples.
