Alice and I attended a Girl Scout Volunteer/Daughter Campout at Bayview State Park this weekend. We had a fantastic time! On Friday night, Alice and I got there early and set up our tent. We were ready for fun.
The first night, there were only fourteen moms and daughters. Alice learned all about setting up a big campsite, getting dinner using our mess kit, and washing dishes.
Some of the older girls took Alice under their wing and showed her how to collect tinder and kindling, get a fire started, and the important step of putting a bucket of water near the fire (just in case). For dinner, we had vegetable soup and rolls. For dessert, the girls baked biscuits in a Dutch oven, over the coals, and we topped the biscuits with sliced peaches and cinnamon. Yum.
After a great night sleep, we awoke to a beautiful morning and took a stroll on the beach.
Then it was back to camp to help with breakfast. Alice took care of the potatoes while I helped with sausage and eggs for breakfast burritos. We wrapped them in foil and warmed them over the coals. Very good!
We then had the day to ourselves and joined two Brownies and their moms for a long walk around the bay. The girls had fun chasing eachother on the beach.
By mid-afternoon, two girls and their moms from our Daisy troop arrived. Alice and Avery had a blast mucking around during low tide. Muddy, muddy, muddy.
Then, it was back to camp to... help with dinner! Boy, camping is a lot of work when you're a Girl Scout. But Alice didn't mind. She loved helping out.
By Saturday evening, our numbers swelled to thirty-four. It was so cool to see the older girls leading the younger ones as they prepared dinner.
They made us "chicken surprise." There were actually two dishes - one for the girls and one for the moms. The girls had chicken, peas, grated carrots, kale, noodles, and some type of sauce. This was all cooked over a Coleman camp stove and was quite tasty. Yes, my girl ate kale, and loved it. The moms were treated to a great chicken curry dish over rice which was cooked in a Dutch oven over the fire. For dessert - mini apple pies over the coals and smores.
Right after dinner, it began to rain. But the girls didn't care - they had glow sticks so they were happy.
They even put on a show for us.
This morning, after a hearty pancake breakfast - hmmm.. as I reflect on this, I realize our weekend had a lot to do with food! - we packed up our tents in the rain. Emery, Alice, and Avery had such a great weekend.
And the moms did too! Lori, Joelle, and I are going to have a great time with our Daisy Girl Scouts this year.
